IRC Democrats March in Brevard, Orlando, and New York City

The Florida Young Democrats of Indian River (FYDIR) proudly marched in the New York City Women’s March on Saturday, January 20th.  More than 200,000 people attended the march along Central Park West.  The Democrats of Indian River also marched in the Brevard march on the same day.

One day later, members from the Democratic Women’s Club of Indian River County marched in the Orlando Women’s March held in Lake Eola Park.  More than 10,000 people rallied as part of Florida’s statewide “Day of Action.”

Speakers encouraged attendees to donate to charities assisting hurricane ravaged Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Florida Keys, sign petitions to restore felon’s voting rights, fight for environmental protections and advocate for the Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals Act.

Overall, however, speakers challenged women to run for office, vote and support progressive candidates and issues.

The mission of Women’s March is to harness the political power of diverse women and their communities to create transformative social change.

At the New York City rally, Senator Kristen Gillibrand noted, “It’s women who are holding our democracy together during these dangerous times.  To change the system, we have to change the players and have women at the table.”

FYDIR plans to bring the spirit of Senator Gillibrand’s words home to Indian River- by identifying, running and supporting young, diverse and progressive candidates up and down the ballot in 2018.
