A Plastic Ocean film screening

In celebration of Earth Day, the Indian River Democrats held a screening of the film, A Plastic Ocean, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on April 20, 2017.

The screening was the kickoff event for the Democrats campaign to ban single use plastic bags in Vero Beach. The film was a powerful reminder of the problem of plastics, not only for the danger they pose for marine mammals and birds but to humans.

All proceeds for the event went to the Vero Beach Lifeguard Association, in recognition of the work they do to keep our beaches safe and clean.

Approximately 130 people attended the screening and were invited to sign a petition to the City Council of Vero Beach to ban all single use plastic bags. As Mayor Moss and the Vero Beach City Council undertake their Visioning Process, the Democrats of Indian River County urge the city to consider a plastic bag ban.

Attendees were given flyers on how to recycle, reuse and reduce the use of plastics. A clean environment is important to the quality of life for our working families.
