55th Anniversary of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” Speech

Election Day 2018 was on the 55thanniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s historic, “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, D.C.  This year, history was made in Florida as Democrat Andrew Gillum became the first African-American nominee for Governor.

Andrew was born in Miami where his mother drove a school bus and his father was a construction worker. He was the first in his family to graduate college and he went on to become the youngest person in history elected to the Tallahassee City Commission, before later becoming Mayor. He has a proud record of 15 years in public service.

On accepting the nomination, Andrew told his supporters:

“We’re going to unite this state. What’s going to bring us together is our common and shared belief that regardless of where you come from, regardless of what your mother or your father did for their profession, regardless of what side of the tracks you live on that, that every single Floridian ought to have their equal and fair shot at the American dream.”

The Democrats of Indian River pledged last year to make a Unity Quilt to honor Dr. King’s Dream.  The quilt has been completed and will hang in the headquarters of the Democrats of Indian River until it is auctioned for charity at the Blue Gala on Saturday, October 20th, 2018 at the Grand Harbor Tennis and Golf Club.

Thanks to volunteer Reva Brugnoli for designing and sewing the quilt.
