Two days after being defeated in an Indian River County School Board election, Merchon Green was appointed chairman of the district’s Equity Committee.

Created in August as part of continued discussions related to a 1967 court order demanding Indian River County integrate its schools, the Equity Committee will be responsible for tracking the district’s progress with the remaining aspects of the desegregation order.

The district has made progress in several of the areas, according to terms of a partial settlement signed by the district and NAACP in August.

Green, who has become an advocate for the black community, especially in Indian River County schools, was tapped by four existing committee members: two each appointed by the district and NAACP.

With her appointment, Green has an excellent opportunity to represent her native Gifford and work to create greater racial harmony in local schools. Getting people to work together will be a challenge, but ending the more than 50-year court battle could be the most important task of her life.
