Democratic Women’s Club Works to Save Our Environment
With an ever increasing threat to our planet, a revitalized Democratic Women’s Club Environment Committee has begun to take action.
The committee is dedicated to the protection and restoration of our environment — locally, statewide, nationally and globally. To do so it has established the following initiatives:
- Maintain an awareness of legislative issues that affect the environment.
- Inform and educate fellow club members and others in the community about the environment and what we can do to protect it.
- Effect change on environmental issues (i.e., letter writing, phone calls, face-to-face meetings).
- Make events and meetings fun to gain participation.
- Liaison with local environmental organizations.
- Use social media to promote the club’s goals.
To date, committee members have toured Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute to learn about the exciting and essential work the institute is conducting. Another tour for interested club members is under consideration.
Through the committee, the DWC adopted and sponsored a loggerhead sea turtle nest, which hatched this summer near Sexton Plaza.
Members have also participated in beach cleanup for International Coastal Cleanup Day, collecting more than 500 pieces of trash at Humiston Park.
Additionally, the committee is working to update DEC’s contract with the county on the Adopt-a-Road program for the quarterly cleanup events on 58th Avenue.
Committee members have followed other groups and are developing a calendar of environmental events throughout the county.
