Statement on the Death of Dr. Martin Luther King 50 Years Ago

Today, we pause and reflect on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King.  Gun violence ended the life of this great man of peace.  Unfortunately, gun violence is more of a problem today, as is intolerance and hate.

The Democrats of Indian River County take heart in the life of this great man and strive to honor him by working for social justice–gun reform, quality healthcare for all, poverty reduction, quality, safe education, a clean environment, protection for DREAMers, civil rights.  Each year, we march in parades honoring his birthday as we dare to preserve his DREAM in our daily lives.

We do this because we know the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King are as true today as they were fifty years ago:

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.  He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.
